In 2012, California prohibited licensed mental health providers from engaging in conversion therapy efforts with minors. While this law bans conversion therapy for minors, survivors often lack meaningful opportunities to seek legal remedies for the harm they experienced. The trauma associated with conversion therapy can take years to fully surface, and many survivors may not recognize or process the harm until long after it occurs. Under current law, strict statutes of limitations often prevent survivors from filing claims once they are ready to come forward. As a result, many are denied the opportunity to pursue accountability and justice. SB 934 builds upon California’s existing protections by ensuring that survivors of conversion therapy have adequate time to seek civil legal remedies. Licensed mental health professionals should not be permitted to provide unscientific and harmful practices without accountability or recourse. Survivors of conversion therapy deserve the opportunity to come forward, pursue justice, and begin the process of healing and closure.
