AB 908 requires the California Department of Education to monitor school districts’ compliance with the FAIR Education Act, ensuring that LGBTQ+ history and contributions are properly included in classroom instruction, as required by law. The FAIR Education Act mandates the inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals and other historically marginalized groups in history and social science curricula. LGBTQ+ students experience higher rates of bullying, harassment, discrimination, and lack of acceptance in schools. These conditions contribute to increased levels of distress and a higher risk of self-harm and suicide. Despite existing legal requirements, implementation remains inconsistent. A recent report from Equality California found that only 37% of surveyed school districts have fully adopted compliant textbooks and instructional materials. AB 908 strengthens enforcement of the FAIR Education Act by requiring the California Department of Education to actively monitor local school district compliance. By ensuring that LGBTQ+-inclusive curriculum is implemented statewide, this bill reinforces existing law and promotes accountability. Strengthened oversight will help create safer, more inclusive learning environments for LGBTQ+ students and all California youth.
